I'm just back from seeing my father Réal Poirier off at Narita airport.
Movies abound with stories about parents being proud of their kids, but there are precious few about kids being incredibly proud of their parents.
I have just gone through the worst two weeks of my life. My ex-wife took my daughter away from me and decided to deprive me of visitation rights. I was unprepared for how viciously she would act. It was like being hit with a massive heart attack.
Luckily I had asked my dad to come over for moral support. When things went from bad to worse, this 80 year old man rose to the occasion and saved his 46 year old son from complete collapse.
I am more proud of my dad, and of my mom for having urged him to come here without her, than I have ever been before.
In spite of the ups & downs of all parent & child relationships, I never once in my life doubted that my parents were decent people who knew what love and right were all about. It's amazing to see all this vindicated so strongly so late in the life of our family.
